Polka Dots & Pineapples in La Fortuna
We finally went on our honeymoon! It seems like months have gone by since we did the ole wedding thing—6 months to be exact. We found it way too overwhelming to plan a wedding and a honeymoon back to back, so we took a few months in between to relax and enjoy being married before jetting off to celebrate.
We flew into Liberia, (north western Costa Rica), picked up a rental car, and then drove ~3 east to La Fortuna. La Fortuna is home to the Arenal Volcano, and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Costa Rica. In this area you can hike, visit hot springs, zipline, rent ATVs, and rappel down waterfalls. (We only did two of those things.) We stayed at the Arenal Springs Resort, which I highly recommend. The resort had multiple hot springs onsite and an incredible view of the volcano. It was definitely a little swankier than places we usually stay, but it was our honeymoon after all.
We chose Costa Rica for our honeymoon because it is the perfect combination of adventure and relaxation. For example, on our second day we hiked to a waterfall, while our third day was spent reading and relaxing in the hot springs. We’re not the most adventurous/athletic couple, so we definitely needed the downtime.
A few tips if you’re planning on visiting La Fortuna in the future:
- Most vendors are cash only, but do take American dollars (small bills are ideal).
- If you rent a car, get an SUV (warning: it will be stick shift!)
- Splurge for GPS and wifi in the car.
- The food is not great, so keep your expectations low. I survived mostly on peanut M&Ms and pizza (shocker).
