Layering an Oversized Blazer for Winter

How to layer a blazer under a coat this winter

Are you guys sick of this tee yet? I feel like I’ve been wearing it on repeat. But, just like most people, when I get something new that I love, I wear it to death. I’ll even do that thing where I’ll wear the new goody with the exact same outfit, multiple days in a row. Sorry, not sorry.

There is so much exciting stuff going on in this look, and I don’t even know where to begin. But I’ll start with the pants because that’s where I started with I put together this outfit. I was really excited about successfully pattern-smashing these plaid trousers. I scored these vintage babies a few years ago and I get so much wear out of them in the winter. I think they are actually men’s pants which makes them even cooler, in my opinion.

Let’s work our way up: Suiting separates, and blazers in general, are hot hot hot right now, so I was extra pumped that my pattern-smashing involved this oversized blazer. I was slightly skeptical about pairing an oversized blazer with these wide leg pants, (oversized + oversized usually doesn’t do my petite frame any favors), but I threw caution to the wind and tried it anyways.

Why I think this pattern mix works: Both houndstooth and plaid (or tartan) are traditional “suiting” prints. So their overall fabric theme works really well together. Secondly, mixing a micro print (the houndstooth) with an oversized print (the plaid) is also helpful. The high contrast between the scale of the prints make them actually more harmonious than if they were closer in size. And the colors are all in the same family: black, white, red, and gray. If the blazer had been pink and white or green and black, I don’t think this pattern-smash would have worked at all.

To keep wearing your blazer when the temperature drops (like oh my God right now), simply layer a heavy coat over it. This combo would also work with a leather jacket or bomber rather than a blazer.

That’s the outfit breakdown my friends! I’d love to hear how you’re remaining fashionable in this frigid weather! Let me know in the comments. 😘

Ahhh! I’m mad for this plaid on plaid-ish look! I don’t even mind that you’re repeating outfits. 😉
