When my husband and I first started dating (100 years ago đ), he was unemployed, and I was still a broke student. We were both living with roommates in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Off the Jefferson stop y’all, when it was cheap(er) and before it was “cool.” So as you can imagine, our first few Valentine’s Days were less than extravagant. But I personally believe that Valentine’s Day is one of those holidays that is actually more memorable when you’re ballin’ on a budget.
We spent our first Valentine’s Day at his apartment where he cooked (what is still) one of my favorite meals for us: seared sesame crusted tuna steaks from The Lobster Place in Chelsea Market and crispy butter-drenched asparagus. It’s charming for me to think back on this memory because this was all before he fell in love with cooking. And this memory reminds me that even though we are now Old Marrieds, we are both constantly changing and evolvingâdiscovering new skills, talents, and hobbies, to enjoy together and individually.
Anyyyy-shways, saccharine memories aside, you know I love any excuse to dress en thĂŠme. And Valentine’s Day is no exception. Per usual, when it comes to theme dressing, a little bit goes a long way. I recommend one lovey-dovey-ooey-gooey piece (or two) rather than an elaborate costumey ensemble. You’ll see below that I paired my Katy Perry Sweetheart Sneakers (super cutesy) with wide leg rainbow pants and a velvet bodysuit (in complimentary colors). While the color scheme and silhouette of this outfit is feminine and flirty, nothing overtly screams VALENTINE’S DAY. Which is just the way I like it.
