One of the most delightful ways I approach building outfits is by channeling a character or archetype. It can be a historical figure or a time period. Like Audrey Hepburn or “1950’s housewife.” But it also doesn’t have to be a real person—it can be a movie or TV character. Someone totally fictional yet iconic.
Cue this modern day Pretty Woman outfit. Only with more tattoos and less prostitution. My dress is made by Fripes & Ketchup, a French atelier who have launched a new dress concept. They create limited edition dresses inspired by classic movie characters. I’m wearing The Vivian after (you guessed it) Julia Roberts as Vivian in Pretty Woman. The movie itself is a cult classic, but I’ve always been most inspired by the costuming. I mean, remember this iconic outfit? And I’ll forever love the scene where Edward snaps the jewelry box closed, startling Vivian into that adorable laugh. In our early dating days my husband pulled the same move. Albeit with something silly like a box of candy.
Switching gears real quick to talk about my bag. I love a fashion piece that gets better with age. Denim that fades and distresses over time, or a leather bag that looks even better with scruffs and a natural patina. And this is exactly why I love this leather crossbody bag from Neva Opet. The leather itself is super high-quality. None of that thin flimsy crap that might as well be synthetic. It’s the perfect size for all my essentials, and the outer pocket fits my phone for easy access. I can’t wait until it gets more beat up over time!
Do you own anything that’s started to look better with age? Tell me in the comments!
