True story: I spent my high school prom with my head in the toilet. And not because I had sampled too much punch. My prom was held on a ship in the San Francisco Bay, and for someone who gets seasick just by looking at a boat, it was torture.
But even though my senior prom sucked, I still have a fond place in my heart for all things prom. Now that I’m more than a decade out of high school, I can look back at all that coming of age stuff with a sweet nostalgia. Remember the days when the upcoming school dance seemed like the WORLD? And making sure you got invited to the afterparty was life or death.
When I saw this 80s cupcake dress on The Dress Form site, my heart did that gasp/flutter thing that only happens when you’re buying vintage—”Oh my gawwwwd will this piece be in my size?!” It was, and I knew then that this pink perfection confection and I were meant to be!
If you’re looking for a unique vintage piece with impeccable construction, look no further than The Dress Form. The owner aims to source garments that are well made and have construction details not found in modern pieces (psssst: this is exactly why vintage is THE BEST). In my opinion, she has an exquisite eye for dresses in particular. Perhaps that’s why she named her shop… The Dress Form… it’s all coming together now 🤯
When styling this number, I opted for the unexpected (but very on-trend) color combo of pink and red. It instantly gives this outfit a more modern feel. I also kept my accessories super simple, clean, and monochromatic. My bag is a sleek single color in a modern silhouette (if you aren’t on the bucket bag bandwagon, get on it already!) and my same-shade shoes follow suit. When wearing an era piece like this, if you add too many flashy accessories, it can easily wander into John Hughes Movie Costume territory. So, finding ways to modernize the look is pretty essential.
I’m trying to dig up a picture of me in my prom dress. When I do, I promise to post it on Insta. Tell me in the comments, what did YOU wear to prom?

June 20, 2018 at 7:05 pmSo cute! I love how you always take vintage pieces and make them feel modern. To prom I wore a tea length pink dress I made (with help from my best friends mom) from a 50s pattern with matching glitter creepers!! I’m not sure if the dress is still somewhere at my dads, but the creeper soles disintegrated a few years back. 😫

June 21, 2018 at 4:06 pmAbsolutely love this!! I’ve always been looking for a vintage shop for dresses so thanks for the recommendation… and my prom, well. i was orange, mermaid color looking dress, silver/black makeup, definitely a night i’ll never forget haha although i wasn’t the one who got sick a girl in my limo did (too much to drink) and ruined the entire night for all of us since we had to take care of her.. if i could redo it again i would definitely tone it down.. A LOT hahah
Any other shops in NYC to buy vintage pieces?

July 26, 2018 at 1:10 amOrange for prom is always a bold move! I had so many questionable bold looks in high school, sigh. I’m glad you weren’t the sick girl, poor thing lol!
