Summer Ain’t Over Til It’s Over

We got a taste of slightly cooler temps on the East Coast last week, but that doesn’t mean summer is over yet. While stores may be piling their window mannequins with scarves and sweaters, we’re still out here sweating in sundresses.

I’ve been getting a lot of questions about my hat collection lately, so I wanted to share some of my sources with you. My latest hat go-to has been Coolibar. They have so many versatile hat styles (for you and your dude), and all of their fabrics have UPF 50+. I took 2 of their hats to Africa with me last month (The Packable Wide Brim and The Monaco Convertible Sun Hat), and I practically live in this one below when I’m local (The Raffia Lifeguard Hat).

I always look for packable (or crushable) hats when I’m planning trip outfits, because packing hats in your luggage is such a pain in the butt. I recommend wearing one hat on the plane (especially if it’s non-crushable), and then packing any other hats inside your suitcase. If your hat is crushable, then you can kind of fold it up and stick it anywhere in your luggage. If it’s not crushable, I recommend packing other items around it to keep it from getting smashed.

Sometimes it doesn’t make sense to pack more than one hat with you on a trip (my husband would argue that you never really need to bring more than one hat, but he doesn’t write this blog, I do!) A simple way to create more looks with one hat is to tie a patterned scarf around the brim (like this vintage one below from A Part of The Rest). You could pack 5 scarves, without sacrificing much suitcase real estate, and suddenly you’ve got 5 different hat looks! I have also been very into the look where you wear a hair scarf tied under your chin and add a hat on top of it. Very Gray Gardens!
