My First Vintage Piece
I was 16. It was summertime. And I was driving home from a long weekend in Lake Tahoe with friends when we stopped at a funky little thrift store in the mountains. I can’t remember if I bought it as a joke, or a costume, but it this burnt orange beauty was the first leather jacket I ever owned, and also my first piece of vintage. I’ve kept it all these years for a number of reasons—the color is super unique, as is the style (somewhere between aviator and bomber). And the shrunken fit makes it a perfect jacket for cool weather. It doesn’t quite zip up comfortably anymore (my boobs arrived sometime in the subsequent years following its purchase), but I can’t bring myself to get rid of it.
Obviously, there are many reasons why I love clothing, but the biggest reason is the way something special makes you feel when you put it on. Clothing can completely transform your mood, or your persona. We all have items in our closets reserved for certain occasions because of how we feel when we wear them. When I wear my overalls, I feel spunky and playful. And when I wear my “interview dress” (a red shift with black piping) I feel like a Boss. I love the concept of transformative clothing so much, I even created a piece about it in my thesis when I was in art school.
When I wear this jacket it totally transforms me. I feel effortlessly cool (leather jackets have a way of doing that!), like I’m walking off a private plane onto a movie set in the 1970s. Do you have a special piece of clothing that takes you to another time or place?
