Learn About My Outfit Shooting Process

Ughhhh. I’ve been trying to get this post out the door for a few weeks now, but my blogger brain doesn’t seem to be connecting with my tippy-tappy fingers. So instead of bullshitting something, I’m going to talk a little bit about my shooting process. ‘Cause pulling back the curtain on blogging is way more interesting that blabbing about fashion anyways.

Now, some of you guys know that my super duper husband is my photographer extraordinaire. Our process is not very glamorous (we’ve definitely gotten in more than one fight while shooting), but it’s always a solid team effort. We only shoot on the weekends because we both work regular 9-7 jobs (oh NYC hours 🙄). This means we try to get 1-2 shoots in per weekend. We also try to roll our shoots in with our normal life. Meaning, we’ll shoot on our way to brunch, in between errands, or before going out with friends.

(Combining shoots with our everyday activities is convenient, but our daily life isn’t so glamorous. Our weekends often consist of multiple trips to Lowe’s and wearing our pajamas until 2pm. Real talk.)

Let’s talk about how I plan my outfits. Sometimes an outfit comes together really naturally: I’ve either bought something recently that I want to shoot, have a partnership post planned, or see an outfit online I want to emulate. Other times it’s not so easy. I love to challenge myself to break “fashion rules” without looking like a dummy (sometimes I’m not successful), because dressing cute for the sake of it makes for banal AF blog fodder, in my humble opinion.

This outfit for example: I challenged myself to patternsmash similar prints (Remember when I told you this was a no-no? Lesson: there are no rules.) and wear this crazy kimono. And although this look may seem casually thrown together, it took a few different combos before I walked out the door satisfied.
